Germany's long-standing custom of Karneval, or "Carnival," was first observed to frighten off winter ghosts. The elderly Germans were sick of winter after several months of frost. People dressed up in frightening masks to frighten away the winter spirits. In addition, they welcomed spring by singing and dancing in the streets.
